Description
The Codex Foundations and Engagement Training is a 5-day immersive program designed to empower national stakeholders with the knowledge and strategic tools to actively participate in Codex Alimentarius work and shape global food safety governance.
This bilingual (English/French), in-person or virtual training is tailored for food safety regulators, Codex Contact Points, technical experts, and institutional leaders seeking to strengthen their country’s voice in international standard-setting. Participants explore the origins, mandate, and legal framework of Codex Alimentarius, gaining a solid understanding of its procedures, texts, and decision-making processes. The course emphasizes the structure and function of national Codex systems, including coordination mechanisms and institutional roles, ensuring that participants can effectively contribute to national and regional Codex platforms.
A key feature of the training is its focus on strategic engagement—preparing participants to intervene meaningfully in Codex meetings, consultations, and negotiations. Through simulations and action planning, attendees practice navigating Codex sessions, drafting interventions, and building influence within technical committees and plenary discussions.
By integrating Africa’s priorities and amplifying regional perspectives, the training supports broader goals of trade equity, public health protection, and institutional transformation. It aligns with international frameworks such as the WTO SPS Agreement and promotes alignment with Codex standards to enhance market access and regulatory credibility.
Upon completion, participants receive a Certificate of Completion, recognizing their readiness to contribute to Codex work and lead national efforts in food safety standard-setting. This training is a strategic investment in capacity-building and inclusive global governance.
