Risk Profiling Training

Duration - 3 Days (Flexible)

Format - In person or Virtual

Language: English, French

Description

This Risk profiling training provides a practical introduction to risk profiling as a foundational tool in food safety risk analysis. Drawing on FAO guidance and Codex principles, it equips participants to develop concise, evidence-informed profiles that support risk management decisions, especially in resource-constrained settings. Risk profiling is a preliminary step that synthesizes available data on food safety hazards, exposure pathways, population vulnerability, and regulatory context—without requiring full risk assessment. It helps define the food safety issue, clarify the scope of concern, and determine whether further scientific advice is needed.

Participants will explore the structure and content of effective risk profiles, including hazard identification, public health relevance, data gaps, and stakeholder perspectives. The training emphasizes practical application through case studies, simulations, and group exercises. It also introduces prioritization techniques and links risk profiling to broader food control strategies, Codex texts, and SPS obligations.

By the end of the course, participants will be able to draft actionable risk profiles that inform national food safety policies, inspection systems, and Codex engagement. The training supports institutional capacity-building and promotes science-based decision-making aligned with international standards.

What You’ll Learn

  • Understand the purpose and scope of risk profiling within the Codex risk analysis framework.
  • Identify key components of a risk profile, including hazard characterization, exposure pathways, and public health relevance.
  • Apply FAO-recommended approaches to develop structured, context-specific risk profiles.
  • Use risk profiles to support prioritization, regulatory decisions, and Codex standard-setting processes.
  • Recognize the role of risk profiling in national food control systems and SPS compliance.
  • Practice drafting and reviewing risk profiles through case studies and peer feedback.
